New paper in Marine Structures on LNG and LPG ships
Published:
Hello dear readers,
Our paper “New analysis in the preliminary design for LNG and LPG ships” is now out in Marine Structures. I’m one of the co-authors.
Here’s the question. When a naval architect starts to design a gas carrier, the first numbers (dimensions, capacity, power) are usually estimated from ships that already exist. We took a catalogue from the Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Group with 145 LNG carriers and 322 LPG carriers built between 1979 and 2023, about 20% of the global gas carrier fleet. We ran simple and multiple regressions to estimate design variables from others, and we compared them with machine learning models.
The result is an updated set of tools for the early stage of ship design.
You can read the paper here.
All the best,
Daniel Precioso, PhD
