IE-RSME Workshop on Designing the Energy Transition

Hello dear readers,

This week I attended the IE–RSME Workshop Series on Applied Mathematics at IE School of Science & Technology. I went as audience this time, and it was great to see Manuel Navarro-García and Bissan Ghaddar (friends and colleagues) present their work on optimization for power systems, fuel supply chains, and urban logistics.

The talks showed how variability, regulation, and infrastructure constraints reshape optimization problems as clean energy scales up. What stuck with me: the same math tools show up in offshore wind farm design and electric last-mile delivery routing, but the constraints look completely different depending on the domain.

I try to stay plugged into events like this because the mix of academia and industry keeps things grounded. You get the theory and the real-world friction in the same room.

All the best,
