Explorables Presentations
Module 6: Explorables and Discrete Models
An explorable is an interactive web simulation of a model. You can change parameters and initial conditions and watch the dynamics respond. In Sessions 27 and 28 you present one explorable to the class, together with a partner.
A large collection is available at Complexity Explorables.
Format
- You work in pairs.
- Each pair presents for ten minutes.
- Five pairs present in each session.
- You choose your model one to two weeks in advance.
- The presentation is worth 10% of the final grade.
What your presentation must do
Your ten minutes must cover three things:
- Explain what is modelled. Say which real system the explorable represents and which quantities the model tracks.
- State the assumptions. List the simplifications behind the rules or equations.
- Add something of your own. This can be an extension of the model, a test of its behaviour, or a criticism of its assumptions.
Why this matters for your project
The explorables also guide the choice of your final group project. The models you and your classmates present give you a list of candidate systems to build on. See the project pages in Module 7 when you start choosing a topic.
